How long do the batteries last?
Battery life depends on several factors such as brand/quality of the batteries, frequency of product usage, environmental conditions etc. Assuming good quality alkaline batteries are used, typically under average usage and operating conditions they will last 6 – 12 months for the products which require a 9v or AAA batteries. For the products which operate on LR44 or LR54 batteries the life will be around 3-6 months for average usage.

Can you test the alarm and/or check the batteries are functioning?
On each Lock Alarm there is the function to test the alarm. Please refer to the individual product instructions for more details (Instruction manuals are available in the Downloads section). In addition, on most of the Lock Alarms there is a LED that flashes when the device is locked. If this LED stops flashing or becomes very faint then this indicates the batteries need changing.

If the batteries are discharged will it affect the locking mechanism on the product?
No. The batteries only power the alarm function and do not affect the locking mechanism, which is totally mechanical – so the device will still lock and unlock even if the batteries become discharged.

Can the batteries be removed to disable the alarm function?
No. The batteries are located in a tamper proof compartment, which when the device is being used cannot be accessed by anyone except the authorised user.

Are the products weatherproof?
Yes, all the Lock Alarms (except item #’s 2770CSA, 6111 and 5676) are suitable for use outdoors in all normal weather conditions. In very extreme weather conditions and/or extremely wet environments it is advisable to place the Lock Alarm device in a sheltered location or wrap a clear plastic bag around the main unit to protect it. This will help prolong battery life and give optimum reliability.

What are the operating temperatures?
With good quality alkaline batteries fitted a Lock Alarm will operate between -20 ĚŠC to 54 ĚŠC (-4 ĚŠF to 130 ĚŠF). For more extreme conditions Lithium batteries should be used which will extend the operating range to -40 ĚŠC to 60 ĚŠC (-40 ĚŠF to 140 ĚŠF).

How secure is a Lock Alarm?
No security device is totally infallible against a highly determined or professional thief. Opportunistic theft accounts for over 98% of all thefts in most countries around the world. A Lock Alarm will provide a significant deterrent factor against these opportunist thieves, as they usually choose easy and vulnerable targets, so any possessions secured by a Lock Alarm will often be ignored in favour of not so well secured items. Secondly, an opportunist thief will most likely run off at the first sound of any alarm. These are viewpoints consistently backed up by Police and security consultants around the world. There are 1000′s of reports from users of a Lock Alarm stating the device helped save their valuables from theft in some way.

What causes the alarm to sound?

CABLE LOCK ALARM 2.4M (8FT), CABLE LOCK ALARM 4.6M (15FT), LOCK ALARM XT, LOCK ALARM XL 10M (30FT), LOCK ALARM XL 20M (60FT), COMPUTALOCK ALARM, LOCK ALARM HANDISAFE & LOCK ALARM PORTASAFE :
The cable has a special conductive central core that, simply explained, creates a “loop circuit” when the cable is locked in place. Any action that breaks the “loop circuit” either permanently or momentarily will activate the alarm. Therefore, if the product is used correctly, the alarm will only sound when one of the following occurs:
(1) when the cable is cut (usually by 50% or more through)
(2) when the cable end is pulled out of the lock hole (this requires a huge amount of force!)
(3) when a sustained attempt is made to force open the device.
It is important to understand these products do NOT have a movement sensor feature so accidental knocks from passers by, windy conditions, movement caused in transit etc. should NOT cause the alarm to sound. Essentially, if the alarm sounds then it means someone is attempting to steal your possessions.

HEAVY DUTY LOCK ALARM & LOCK ALARM MAXI :
The cable has a special conductive central core that, simply explained, creates a “loop circuit” when the cable is locked in place. Any action that breaks the “loop circuit” either permanently or momentarily will activate the alarm. Therefore, if the product is used correctly, the alarm will only sound when one of the following occurs:
(1) when the cable is cut (usually by 50% or more through)
(2) when a sustained attempt is made to force open the main lock unit

LOCK ALARM MINI :
The cable has a special conductive central core that, simply explained, creates a “loop circuit” when the cable is locked in place. Any action that breaks the “loop circuit” either permanently or momentarily will activate the alarm. Therefore, if the product is used correctly, the alarm will sound when one of the following occurs:
(1) when the cable is cut (usually by 50% or more through)
(2) when the cable end is pulled out of the lock hole (this requires a huge amount of force!)
In addition, the Lock Alarm Mini has a movement sensor feature. If the movement sensor is set by the user at the time the cable is locked in place then the alarm will also sound if the lock is disturbed by someone. A time delay enables the user to lock/unlock before the alarm activates.

U-SHACKLE LOCK ALARM & LOCK ALARM PADLOCK :
The shackle is specially designed such that it will detect when it has been cut. Therefore, if the product is used correctly, the alarm will sound when one of the following occurs:
(1) when the shackle is cut through
(2) when the shackle is forced out of the lock (this requires a huge amount of force!)
(3) when a sustained attempt is made to force open the device.
In addition, the U-Shackle Lock Alarm and the Lock Alarm Padlock have a shock sensor incorporated into them. In the event someone should hit the main lock unit hard or try to “bump” the lock cylinder (a common technique used by thieves on padlocks) then the alarm will also start sounding.

LOCK ALARM DISK :
The Lock Alarm Disk has a shock sensor integrated into it. After the locking pin has been locked into the brake disk the shock sensor is automatically activated (assuming the batteries are installed). In the event someone should hit the lock hard or an attempt is made to move the vehicle to which it is fitted then the alarm will start to sound.

What about “false alarms”?

If the device is functioning correctly and being used exactly as per the instruction manual then “false alarms” should NOT occur. The same applies for the Lock Alarm Mini when the movement sensor function is not being used. For the items with a shock sensor function, the alarm will not normally sound unless the lock comes under attack or is subject to a strong impact (caused by dropping or it banging against another object). For exact details refer to the “What causes the alarm to sound?” question above.

If the alarm starts how long will it continue to sound for?

If the alarm is sounding because the cable/shackle has been cut or the device has been forced open then the alarm will continue to sound until either the user turns it off by unlocking the device OR the batteries drain low (usually this is within 30-60 minutes). If the alarm however is sounding as a result of the shock sensor or the movement sensor (for those items which have this feature) then the alarm will only sound for approximately 30 seconds before it resets. In this situation, if the impact (shock) or movement is applied again to the device the alarm will sound for a further 30 seconds before resetting, and so on.

I thought most people ignore alarms?

It is a fact certain alarms such as those installed in cars and in buildings are sometimes ignored by members of the public, however continual feedback from users of a Lock Alarm prove the situation to be different. They are most commonly used in close vicinity to the owner and/or in busy locations where if an alarm sounds and someone is seen to be acting suspiciously then considerable attention is attracted. In addition, Police state that opportunist thieves (who account for approx. 98% of all thefts) will most likely run away empty handed at the first sound of an alarm. To back all this up there are 1000’s of reported cases from users whereby in their opinion the alarm prevented the theft of their possessions.

Is there a warranty provided with a Lock Alarm?

Yes, each Lock Alarm is warranted against defects in material and workmanship for a period of 12 months. Proof of purchase will be required. At our option we will either repair or replace the device.

Have they been tested by independent and recognised organisations?

Yes, all the products have been tested by world renowned independent testing organisations, and comply with regulations set by BS, FCC, TUV etc, and also for conformity with the relevant CE, RoHs and REACH directives.
